Rohtak, Haryana: In a major breakthrough during routine checking, Haryana Police seized ₹1 crore in cash from a Delhi-registered taxi late Tuesday night in Rohtak district. The police have detained four men traveling in the vehicle and launched an investigation into the source of the money.
According to officials, the operation took place under the Shivaji Colony police station limits near the Jalebi Chowk flyover, where a checkpoint had been set up as part of heightened security measures following the Delhi Red Fort blast incident.
Suspicious behavior led to the search
Station House Officer (SHO) Rakesh Saini stated that around 9:30 PM, a taxi coming from Jhajjar side was signaled to stop. The occupants appeared nervous and attempted to leave quickly, arousing suspicion. On searching the vehicle, police initially found nothing unusual. However, upon checking the passengers’ bags, officers were stunned to discover bundles of ₹500 notes, along with several bundles of ₹100 and ₹200 denominations.
Hours-long cash counting operation
The taxi’s passengers — identified as Ravi, Sunil, and Pramod from Delhi, and Amit from Rohtak — were taken into custody for questioning. The cash was brought to the police station, where it took officials several hours to count the full amount, totaling ₹1 crore.
When interrogated, the four men failed to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the source or intended destination of the cash. The seized money has been deposited into the government treasury, and the Income Tax Department has been notified. Tax officials visited the police station on Wednesday morning to question the detainees about the origin and possible transaction links of the seized funds.
Police officials confirmed that further investigation is underway to determine whether the money is linked to illegal activities, tax evasion, or hawala networks.
