Chandigarh: Punjab and Haryana Chief Ministers met on Tuesday to discuss the long-standing dispute over the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal. The meeting, held in a positive and constructive atmosphere, ended with both leaders agreeing to continue discussions at the officials’ level and take steps toward a mutually acceptable solution.
Haryana CM Naib Singh Saini and Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann addressed the media together after the meeting. Both emphasized that the SYL issue has been pending for many years, and today’s dialogue was aimed at finding common ground.
Haryana CM’s Statement
Naib Singh Saini said, “We convened the meeting in line with the Supreme Court’s directives. The discussion was meaningful and conducted in a positive spirit. Previously, talks were held under the chairmanship of CR Patil, which were also constructive. Today’s conversation continued in the same positive atmosphere. We have decided that our officials will hold detailed discussions in the coming days, and any decisions emerging from those talks will be shared with us so that we can move forward.”
Punjab CM’s Statement
Speaking after the meeting, Bhagwant Mann said, “The discussion took place in a cordial environment. This issue has been pending for a long time. Haryana is not our enemy—it is our brother. Today, we agreed that officials from both states will meet regularly. We want a solution soon, without compromising the rights of either state.”
The meeting reflects a mutual commitment to resolving the SYL dispute through dialogue and cooperation rather than confrontation.
