Mathura: Premananda Maharaj of Vrindavan has clarified a common dilemma faced by working professionals: Should one prioritize devotion or family responsibilities? Speaking to a devotee, Maharaj emphasized that true devotion lies in fulfilling one’s duties and dedicating all actions to God, highlighting the significance of “Krishnarpanamastu”—offering one’s work to Lord Krishna.
A devotee asked Maharaj, “If we devote the entire day to spiritual practices while our children or family are neglected, is that true devotion?” The saint’s reply was both practical and profound: “Which devotion requires your children to suffer? Is staying idle true devotion? No. Work—whether farming, business, or a job—while remembering ‘Ram-Ram’ or ‘Radha-Radha,’ is itself worship when done sincerely. Dedicate your actions to God. Avoid dishonesty, violence, theft, or sinful deeds.”
Love Your Family, Serve Your Duty
Maharaj urged devotees to love their families wholeheartedly: “Care for your spouse and children, feed and nurture them, and offer all your actions to God. This is the devotion of a householder. Sitting idle for hours in meditation may be the devotion of a renunciate, but for a householder, devotion is in fulfilling responsibilities.”
He added: “From morning till night, you have work. While performing your duties, chant the divine names in between. Your earnings and your service to your family, when offered to the Lord, are blessed by His grace. Follow the path of righteousness. Remember God as you go about your daily duties. When you go to work and silently repeat ‘Radha-Radha’ or ‘Ram-Krishna-Hari,’ and mentally say ‘Krishnarpanamastu’, the entire eight hours of labor become an offering at Lord Krishna’s feet.”
Premananda Maharaj’s guidance offers a practical approach to integrate devotion into everyday life without neglecting family, showing that true spirituality lies in fulfilling responsibilities with love and dedication.
