Mathura:
Revered spiritual saint Pujya Shri Premanand Ji Maharaj, regarded as one of the most influential spiritual guides of the present era, recently addressed a deeply sensitive and emotional question raised by his disciples during a satsang. A disciple asked, “Maharaj Ji, what will be our spiritual state after you leave your physical body, and what command will remain for us?” Responding with compassion and clarity, Premanand Ji Maharaj offered profound guidance that left disciples deeply reassured.
Importance of a Saint’s Physical Presence
Premanand Ji Maharaj acknowledged that the influence of great saints is most strongly felt while they are physically present. He explained that after a saint leaves the mortal body, a sense of spiritual void is often experienced at that place. The peace, energy, and transformation that arise from direct darshan and face-to-face interaction cannot be fully replicated through mobile phones or video recordings.
Drawing a powerful analogy, he compared the guru to a mother, stating that just as a child requires the physical presence of the mother, a spiritual seeker equally needs the living guidance and proximity of the guru. Such presence, he said, acts like “spiritual life-saving medicine” for the aspirant.
‘Naam and Vani’—The Supreme Command for Disciples
Clarifying the path for disciples after a guru’s physical departure, Premanand Ji Maharaj emphasized that “Naam and Vani” (the sacred name and the guru’s teachings) remain the highest command. He stated that the mantra bestowed by the guru, consistent chanting of the divine name, and unwavering adherence to the guru’s principles are the only true ways to remain connected to the guru.
He reassured disciples that those who sincerely follow the guru’s prescribed spiritual discipline never feel alone, as the guru’s presence continues through divine remembrance and teachings.
Spiritual Practice and the Path of Maturity
Explaining the stages of spiritual practice, Maharaj Ji said that in the initial phase of sadhana, the guru’s presence is as essential as a doctor and hospital are for a patient. During this stage, even acknowledging mistakes before the guru can lead to immediate correction and growth.
However, as spiritual practice matures and discipline becomes firm, the seeker naturally begins to walk the path independently. Encouraging his followers, Premanand Ji Maharaj advised them to make full use of the saint’s living presence while it exists, and later to anchor their lives in the guru’s words and principles.
He concluded by stating that living by the guru’s teachings after his physical departure is the truest form of guru-seva, and the surest way to continue progressing on the spiritual path.
