Surajpur, Chhattisgarh: A shocking case of negligence by the Health Department has come to light in Surajpur district. A pregnant woman from Lanjit village was forced to give birth in a car after the local health center remained locked during duty hours.
The woman’s family rushed her to the primary health center in Lanjit when she went into labor. However, to their shock, the gate of the hospital was locked, and no staff were present to assist. Despite waiting for a long time, the family received no help.
Villagers Outraged
Local women, witnessing the distress of the pregnant woman, immediately took action and facilitated the delivery inside a car. The incident sparked widespread anger among villagers when they realized the hospital had been locked during operational hours.
Health Center Opens Two Hours Later
After mounting public outrage, the hospital gate was finally opened about two hours later. Both the mother and the newborn were admitted for medical care. Villagers have demanded a thorough investigation by the District Medical Officer and strict action against the responsible officials.
Officials Respond
Dr. K.D. Pakra, Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO), confirmed that the health center was found locked during duty hours. “A ‘show cause’ notice has been issued to all staff posted at the center,” he said. Dr. Pakra added that if the explanations provided by the staff are unsatisfactory, strict disciplinary action will be initiated under the supervision of the Chief Medical and Health Officer, Surajpur.
The notice was issued by the Block Medical Officer, Odgi, directing all staff to respond within a day.
