Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh: In a shocking incident in Prayagraj, an army jawan brutally murdered his 17-year-old girlfriend and attempted to cover it up while continuing with his wedding preparations. The girl, a 12th-grade student, had been lured under the pretext of marriage before being stabbed and buried in a remote location.
Discovery of the Crime
On 15 November, locals near Lakharwan village in the Tharwai police station area discovered a suspicious mound of earth with a partially visible hand. Police retrieved the body, which had deep stab wounds and a scarf tightly wrapped around the neck. The girl’s death caused widespread shock in the community.
Connection to Army Jawan
Investigations revealed that the victim had been in contact with Harsvardhan Singh, also known as Dilip Singh, a 26-year-old army jawan, via Instagram. The relationship developed into a romantic involvement. The girl had wished to marry the jawan, unaware that he was already engaged. When she pressed him to break off his prior engagement and marry her, tensions escalated.
Premeditated Murder
According to DCP Gangangar Kuldeep Singh Gunawat and DCP City Manish Kumar Shandilya, Harsvardhan Singh lured the girl on the pretense of arranging their wedding. After a heated argument at a remote site near his home, Singh strangled her with a scarf, stabbed her multiple times, and buried her using a spade taken from a nearby temple. He then discarded her school bag, which still contained a box of sindoor.
Arrest and Evidence
The Prayagraj police arrested Harsvardhan Singh on 17 November near Purana Pul Mansaita river. Authorities recovered the spade and knife used in the murder. The investigation also linked the victim’s mobile number, found in her notebook, to the accused, which helped the police track him down.
A Calculated Deception
In a chilling display of pretense, Harsvardhan Singh had spent the day shopping and preparing for his upcoming wedding on 30 November, even as he had committed the murder. The victim had been completely misled, believing the day would be for her marriage rituals, including buying sindoor and preparing her bag for the occasion.
This horrifying case has sent shockwaves across Prayagraj, highlighting the dangers of trust betrayed in relationships and raising questions about the actions of the accused despite his position in the army.
