Police Took Me to the Station and Beat Me”: Lekhpal in Badaun Accuses Cops of Assault, ₹50,000 Bribe Demand

Badaun (UP): A shocking incident has emerged from Badaun where a lekhpal has accused police personnel of assaulting him and demanding ₹50,000 for his release. The lekhpal, identified as Brajesh Kumar Yadav, was later admitted to the district hospital after his condition reportedly deteriorated. Police, however, claim he was drunk and was sent for a medical examination.

Claim: “Stopped Despite Permission, Then Taken to the Outpost and Beaten”

According to Brajesh Kumar Yadav, he was returning from Padaua village after completing BLO duties on Tuesday. As he neared the Mandi Samiti area, police personnel stopped a tractor-trolley unloading soil in his field.

Yadav claims he showed the officers a valid mining permit issued by the Mining Department, yet a heated argument followed. He alleges that two constables forcibly took him to the Mandi Samiti police outpost under Civil Lines police station limits, where he was beaten up. He further alleges that the assault continued even after he was taken to the main police station.

“₹50,000 Demand and Mobile Phone Snatched”

The lekhpal alleges that the police demanded ₹50,000 to let him go and even confiscated his mobile phone. After the alleged assault, he was taken to the district hospital.
As news of the incident spread, several officials from the Lekhpal Association reached the hospital and stood firmly in support of Yadav. The association has warned of protests if action is not taken against the accused policemen.

Lekhpal Association President Bhojraj said that harassment of revenue officials will not be tolerated and threatened a district-wide strike if justice is not delivered.

Police Statement: “He Was Drunk”

Civil Lines Station House Officer Neeraj Malik refuted the allegations, stating that the lekhpal was under the influence of alcohol, and was sent for a medical examination as per procedure. Further legal action will be taken based on the medical report, he said.

The incident has triggered outrage among revenue department employees and may escalate into a larger protest if the matter is not resolved promptly.
