PM Modi Criticizes Mamata Government, Launches Vande Bharat Train in Malda

Malda, January 17, 2026: During his visit to West Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the first Made-in-India Vande Bharat sleeper train from Malda and strongly criticized the Mamata Banerjee-led government on multiple fronts.

Addressing a large public rally, PM Modi described the state government as “cruel and heartless” and stressed that it was necessary for West Bengal to be free from mismanagement and corruption. He urged that, like other states, the people of Bengal should have access to up to ₹5 lakh in free healthcare under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, which has not been implemented in the state so far.

Focus on Development and Eastern India
PM Modi emphasized that Eastern India’s development is vital for achieving India’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047. He said that decades of divisive politics had held back the region, but the BJP has freed these states from such politics, earning the trust of the people.

Launch of Vande Bharat Trains
Earlier in the day, PM Modi flagged off the first Vande Bharat sleeper trains, highlighting that the trains are entirely “Made in India” and designed to make travel more comfortable. He noted that new rail services and other development projects inaugurated in Malda will ease travel and facilitate trade.

Criticism of TMC and Corruption Allegations
PM Modi sharply criticized the Trinamool Congress (TMC) for alleged corruption and mismanagement, particularly in flood relief efforts. He claimed that funds meant for flood victims were misappropriated, while undeserving accounts received multiple payments. He vowed that such practices would end once the BJP forms the government in West Bengal.

Focus on Farmers and Infrastructure
The Prime Minister highlighted that farmers in Malda and Murshidabad are struggling due to lack of facilities and migration for livelihood. He promised that under BJP rule, Malda would regain its historic prominence, farmers would receive new opportunities, and infrastructure would improve.

Reference to BJP’s Recent Wins
PM Modi also pointed to the BJP’s recent successes in Maharashtra’s municipal elections, including a historic win in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), as an example of the party’s governance and development model gaining public support across India.
