Pickpocket Gang Disguised as Goddess Kali, Durga and Lord Shiva Busted in Kolkata; Gujarat Link Found

Kolkata: In a shocking revelation, the Kolkata Police have busted a pickpocket gang that used to disguise itself as Hindu deities such as Goddess Kali, Goddess Durga, and Lord Shiva to target unsuspecting people on city streets.

The accused reportedly exploited public faith and sympathy by dressing up in religious costumes and roaming in crowded areas, where they allegedly stole valuables, particularly mobile phones, from devotees and pedestrians.

Four Accused Arrested, All From Gujarat

Police confirmed that four men have been arrested in connection with the case. The accused have been identified as:

  • Elin Ramju Salat
  • Dhiru Kalobhai Salat
  • Samirbhai Salat
  • Raju Kumar

All four are residents of Anand district in Gujarat. Police officials stated that the men are habitual offenders and had been actively operating in Kolkata.

Disguises Used to Gain Trust

According to investigators, the gang would frequently appear in public spaces wearing traditional attire and makeup resembling divine figures. Their disguises helped them blend into religious gatherings and tourist zones, allowing them to easily approach crowds without raising suspicion.

A senior officer said the gang seemed well aware of the emotional respect people have for such performers and used that “soft corner” to commit theft.

Bohurupi: A Folk Art Misused for Crime

Police noted that Bohurupi, once a popular folk tradition, is a declining cultural art form in Bengal. Traditionally, Bohurupis perform mythological scenes during festivals and events, often dressing up as gods and goddesses.

However, the arrested accused allegedly misused this cultural identity to carry out criminal activities.

Investigation Triggered After Jorasanko Complaint

The investigation began after a case was registered in the Jorasanko area, following which police launched a detailed probe. During the course of the investigation, Mohammad Sahanawaz was detained from the Park Street area, and his interrogation reportedly provided crucial leads about the gang.

Racketeering Suspected Beyond Kolkata

Police officials believe the racket may not be limited to Kolkata alone and could be operating in other cities as well. Further investigation is underway to identify additional members and determine the full extent of the network.

Authorities have assured that strict action will be taken against those involved in exploiting religious sentiments for criminal gain.
