Petition Seeks Ban on PM Offering Chadar at Khwaja Garib Nawaz Dargah; Ajmer Court to Hear Case Amid Urs Festivities

Ajmer: A petition seeking to prohibit the tradition of the Prime Minister offering a ceremonial chadar (holy cloth) at the Khwaja Garib Nawaz Dargah during the annual Urs is scheduled for hearing at the Ajmer court on Thursday. The court had deferred the hearing on Wednesday, citing the sensitive nature of the matter and security concerns.

Controversy During Urs
The official Urs celebrations at Ajmer Sharif began on 17 December. Amid the festivities, the petition challenging the practice of offering a chadar by the Prime Minister, Chief Minister, and other ministers has sparked discussion in both religious and political circles. The petitioners claim that such ceremonial activities influence public perception and have previously sought a survey related to another issue linked with the Dargah complex.

Security and Law-and-Order Concerns
When the hearing was initially scheduled for Wednesday, heightened security arrangements were made at the court premises. Considering law-and-order and safety concerns, the court decided to postpone the hearing to the following day.

Arguments and Proceedings
While the petitioners demand a ban on the practice, the government and Dargah management have argued that the petition is baseless and not supported by facts. The court has clarified that a decision will be taken only after hearing arguments from all sides. In the meantime, traditional Urs rituals are continuing as per the schedule, and all eyes remain on the upcoming hearing for any developments.
