In a significant move to strengthen Bihar’s public healthcare infrastructure, the Nitish Kumar-led state government has initiated preparations to redevelop the historic Gardanibagh Government Hospital in Patna. The aging structure will soon be demolished to make way for a modern, three-storey hospital equipped with advanced medical facilities.
Gardanibagh Hospital, one of the capital’s oldest and most trusted government healthcare institutions, is slated for a complete overhaul under the state’s broader plan to upgrade existing hospitals and improve patient care standards. According to official sources, the Bihar Medical Services and Infrastructure Corporation Limited (BMSICL) has already conducted a detailed site measurement of the hospital premises, marking the first formal step toward construction.
The proposed new building will not only be larger but will also offer significantly enhanced facilities compared to the current setup. The objective is to ensure better diagnosis, treatment, and overall patient experience, while easing the pressure on major referral hospitals such as PMCH.
Confirming the development, Gardanibagh Hospital Deputy Superintendent Seema Singh stated that the post-measurement report has been submitted to the authorities. “With the completion of the formalities, construction work on the new hospital is expected to begin soon,” she said. Hospital staff also indicated that BMSICL plans to construct the facility strictly as a three-floor structure, in line with modern healthcare design standards.
To facilitate uninterrupted medical services during construction, the hospital was shifted in September this year to a newly constructed adjacent building. Gardanibagh Hospital caters to hundreds of patients daily, many from densely populated areas including Mithapur, Purandarpur, Jakkanpur, Yarpur, Gardanibagh, Anisabad, and Chitkohra.
Once completed, the upgraded hospital is expected to emerge as a major healthcare hub for south and central Patna, providing residents with quality treatment closer to home. This will significantly reduce their dependence on overcrowded tertiary hospitals and offer a crucial emergency care alternative.
In a related development, renovation work on the nearby Civil Surgeon’s Office is also set to begin soon, further reinforcing the government’s commitment to modernizing healthcare infrastructure in the state capital.
