Patna Murder Mystery: Who Ordered Asharfi Rai’s Killing? Investigation Hits Dead End Amid Land Dispute

Patna, Bihar: Even after 48 hours of investigation, Patna police have been unable to identify the mastermind behind the murder of property dealer Asharfi Rai (55). The case has taken a dramatic turn as the crowd at the scene killed the two assailants on the spot, leaving police without key leads.

The Shooting Incident
The incident occurred near Gardanibag, where Asharfi Rai was shot multiple times by two attackers. Minutes after the attack, local residents and Rai’s family members caught the fleeing gunmen, later identified as Praveen alias Rohan Kumar (37) of Kumhar Toli, Kankarbagh, and Vijay Kumar (37) of Yarpur. Both were beaten to death by the crowd immediately. Police recovered a pistol, a revolver, and five live cartridges from the scene.

Arrest of Asharfi’s Son
In a dramatic twist, Asharfi’s son Birendra Rai, aka Mirchai Gop, has been arrested for allegedly participating in the lynching of the two shooters. Investigations are ongoing. Rohan was identified by his physical appearance, clothing, and a tattoo of his daughter Aarohi’s name on his arm.

Police Statement
Former City SP Parichay Kumar confirmed that two separate FIRs were filed at Gardanibag Police Station: one by Asharfi’s family regarding his murder, and another by the police regarding the lynching of the shooters. According to the SP, the family named five relatives in connection with a property dispute involving six plots, which are already under court proceedings. “No concrete evidence has surfaced so far, and since the shooters are deceased, the mastermind behind the contract killing remains unidentified,” he said.

DSP Ranjan Kumar added that 25–30 unidentified individuals have also been named in the case. The investigation continues as police probe the motive and potential conspirators behind the killing.
