Patna: In a horrifying incident in Gopalpur, Patna, a 17-year-old schoolgirl was set on fire by Aditya Kumar, the son of a local councillor, after she refused to talk to him. The girl succumbed to her injuries after six days of treatment at NMCH, highlighting serious concerns about women’s safety and the abuse of power by influential families. The accused is currently at large, and police are conducting extensive raids to apprehend him.
The incident occurred on the evening of 17 January in Bairia village under the Gopalpur police jurisdiction. The girl, a Class 10 student, was returning home with her father’s hard-earned wages when Aditya reportedly blocked her path and insisted she talk to him. When she refused, a heated argument ensued, and the accused poured petrol on her and set her ablaze. The severely burned girl ran about 100 feet seeking help before collapsing on the road.
Prior Threats and Harassment
The victim’s family alleges that Aditya had been harassing the girl for some time, pressuring her into a friendship and threatening to share objectionable pictures of her on social media to defame her. The girl’s father, a daily-wage laborer, said that Aditya had previously threatened to kill her, but no one anticipated he would go to such an extreme.
Police Response
Following the girl’s death, tension has escalated in the area. An FIR has been registered, and special police teams have been formed to locate and arrest the accused. Authorities have emphasized that despite his political connections as a councillor’s son, strict action will be taken under the law. The hunt for Aditya Kumar continues, with raids ongoing at suspected hideouts.
