Path Cleared for International Flights from Patna; Land Secured for Airport Radar

Patna: International flights from Patna are set to take off soon as the installation of a radar at Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport has been fast-tracked to enhance flight safety and operations.

The district administration has identified two one-acre plots near the airport for the radar setup. This move clears the way for smoother international flight operations. One of these plots belongs to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and will soon be transferred to the airport authorities. The second plot, managed by the Bihar State Industrial Area Development Authority, is located behind the Bihar Rajpath Vikas Nigam office. Earlier plans to develop a goods facility there were opposed by the airport administration on security grounds.

Currently, flight operations at Patna Airport are managed through visual and navigation systems, with approximately 45 pairs of flights operating daily. A new terminal building, constructed at a cost of around ₹1,200 crore, has already been completed. However, the absence of a radar has limited the number of flights the airport can handle.

Airport officials say that once the radar is operational, multiple aircraft will be able to land and take off simultaneously on the same runway. The radar will provide real-time data on aircraft location, speed, and distance, ensuring precise monitoring. It will also facilitate safer operations during adverse weather conditions such as fog or low visibility.

The radar installation marks a significant step toward modernizing Patna Airport and expanding its capabilities to handle international flights efficiently.
