Patna, Bihar: A major accident was narrowly averted at the Bihar Assembly on Friday when a portion of the balcony roof collapsed. The incident occurred just as the Assembly Speaker was entering the chamber to attend the proceedings. Fortunately, the Speaker was at a safe distance when the debris fell, avoiding any injuries. The sudden mishap caused panic across the Assembly premises.
Renovation Sparks Safety Concerns
The Bihar Assembly building underwent extensive renovation a few months ago at a cost of several lakhs. The collapse of the balcony roof immediately raised questions about construction quality and safety oversight. Following the incident, the affected area was cordoned off temporarily to prevent any accidents, and movement of Assembly members was restricted.
Opposition Demands Immediate Investigation
RJD MLA Kumar Sarvjeet, present at the site during the Zero Hour session, demanded a thorough investigation into the construction and renovation work. He said, “I was present to submit my questions when this portion of the balcony suddenly collapsed. Many Members of the Legislative Assembly were nearby. Had it fallen inside the chamber, the consequences could have been catastrophic. This highlights serious negligence in building maintenance.”
He further added that areas previously used for public access and media interaction have been blocked. “The very infrastructure of our democracy is at risk. The government must take immediate cognizance of this situation,” Sarvjeet said.
The incident has reignited debate over building safety in public institutions and the need for stricter oversight during renovation projects.
