Jamshedpur: A new revolution in education is set to unfold in Jamshedpur’s government schools. Starting from the 2026-27 academic session, not only children but also their parents will be seen attending classes, as the East Singhbhum district administration launches a unique initiative to promote adult literacy.
The program, part of the Literate India Campaign and the Hulas initiative, aims to empower illiterate parents with basic reading, writing, and arithmetic skills, enabling them to actively support their children’s education.
Daily One-Hour Classes for Parents
Under this scheme, all government schools in the district will conduct one-hour daily classes for parents from Monday to Saturday. These sessions will take place during school hours, ensuring that children’s learning is not disrupted while parents also gain access to education.
Identifying Illiterate Parents
Teachers are preparing lists of illiterate parents in their respective zones to ensure effective implementation. During registration, parents lacking basic literacy skills are identified. Each school is required to enroll at least 15 such parents to participate in the program.
Learning Alongside Children
As students attend their regular classes, parents will simultaneously attend separate sessions within the school premises. The same teachers who teach the children will conduct these classes, ensuring smooth coordination and a comfortable learning environment for parents.
Focus on Basic Literacy and Numeracy
Parents will be taught fundamental skills such as writing their names, signing documents, and basic arithmetic including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The objective is to make them self-reliant in their daily lives.
Inclusive for Mothers and Fathers
The program is designed for both mothers and fathers, ensuring equal participation of men and women in this literacy drive.
Assessment and Recognition
Parents’ learning progress will be assessed through regular tests. At the end of the session, high-performing parents will be recognized and honored for their achievements.
District-Wide Implementation
The initiative will cover all primary, middle, and high schools in East Singhbhum. Parent classes will commence following the students’ annual examinations, starting April 2026, running alongside children’s new academic sessions.
Principal Emphasizes Importance
Arvind Kumar Tiwari, Principal of Upgraded Middle School Tagardih, described the initiative as highly significant. “This program ensures that no child’s parent remains illiterate and all parents are empowered to actively support their child’s learning,” he said. He noted that children often lag behind when parents are unable to understand homework, school activities, or academic progress. By educating parents, the program strengthens families and positions them as active participants in shaping their children’s future.
He added, “This initiative will not only empower parents but also elevate the overall educational standards in society, paving the way for a brighter future for entire families.”
