
Noida, January 5, 2026: Padma Shri Rajaram Jain, the renowned Indian scientist, linguist, and author, passed away on Sunday afternoon at the age of 96. He had been unwell for the past few days, and his family was by his side during his final moments.
Residing in Sector-34, Noida, Rajaram Jain is survived by his four children — Ratna Jain, Rajeev Goel, Rashmi Jain, and Rajesh Pankaj — all of whom live outside the city.
Born in 1929 in Malthoun, Madhya Pradesh, Rajaram Jain was not only a distinguished scientist but also an expert in linguistics, known for his profound knowledge of ancient languages such as Prakrit and Apabhramsa. His death has sent waves of grief through the literary and academic communities.
According to his daughter, Ratna Jain, he was adept at studying and translating rare manuscripts. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to Indian languages and literature, he was awarded the Padma Shri in 2024 and the Presidential Award in 2000. Since 2003, he had been living with his family in Noida.
Rajaram Jain authored over 40 books during his lifetime. He meticulously collected and studied unpublished manuscripts from the 14th–15th centuries, including works of the medieval poet Reidhu. He translated these texts into Hindi, providing scholars and literature enthusiasts a window into the culture and literary richness of the period.
He also served as a member of the UGC NET and the Presidential Award selection committee. His wife passed away in March 2025, and he was known for supporting her pursuit of education after their marriage.
His passing marks the end of an era for Indian literature and linguistics, leaving behind a rich legacy of scholarship and cultural preservation.
