Hyderabad: The debate over population and family size has taken a political turn in India, as AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi responded sharply to statements made by Maharashtra leader Navneet Rana urging Hindus to have more children. Owaisi’s remarks also came amid recent comments by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on ‘Love Jihad.’
“I Already Have Six Children”
Rana had earlier suggested that Hindus should have at least three to four children to counter those who, according to her, aim to change India’s demographic balance. Responding to this, Owaisi said, “I already have six children. Who is stopping you from having four?” He added that in Maharashtra, individuals with more than two children are restricted from contesting panchayat elections—a rule that had also applied in Telangana but has since been revised.
Rana’s Controversial Statement
Navneet Rana had claimed that there are people openly admitting to having four wives and 19 children, and urged Hindus to match the numbers to prevent India from becoming like Pakistan. She said, “I appeal to all Hindus—why should we be satisfied with just one child? We should have three to four children to counter these conspiracies.”
Owaisi on Mohan Bhagwat and Love Jihad
Owaisi also addressed statements by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat regarding ‘Love Jihad.’ He emphasized that if such incidents are genuinely occurring, the Sangh Parivar and BJP must provide solid evidence and official records. “If adults are making their own choices, personal opinions should not interfere. Present the numbers in Parliament, show the states where these cases have been recorded, and define clearly what constitutes ‘Love Jihad.’” he said.
Focus on Real Issues
Owaisi concluded by highlighting the need to prioritize pressing issues like employment for youth, cautioning that political debates on personal choices and population distract from matters that directly impact society.
