
Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, February 16, 2026: More than 40 residents of Eco Village-3 Royal Court and Himalaya Pride societies in Greater Noida West fell ill after consuming dishes made with buckwheat flour (kuttu) during Maha Shivratri fasting celebrations. Several people were hospitalized, raising concerns about food safety in the area.
Sudden Illness After Breaking the Fast
According to residents of Eco Village-3, people had consumed buckwheat-based dishes in the evening while breaking their fast. Shortly afterward, numerous individuals began experiencing stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. Within a short time, more than 25 people fell sick, and those in critical condition were rushed to private hospitals. Doctors have reported that most patients are now stable, with some discharged after treatment, while others remain under observation.
Himalaya Pride Residents Also Affected
In Himalaya Pride Society, approximately 15 residents reported similar symptoms after consuming buckwheat flour. Residents were immediately taken to hospitals after the incident was circulated on the society’s WhatsApp group, causing panic in the community.
Suspected Contaminated or Spoiled Flour
Residents stated that some had purchased buckwheat flour from local markets while others had ordered it online. Preliminary suspicion points to spoiled or adulterated flour as the likely cause of the food poisoning.
Questions Raised Over Food Safety Measures
Following the incident, concerns have been raised about the effectiveness of the food safety department, with residents alleging that authorities have failed to prevent the sale of adulterated products in the market. As of now, no official statement has been released by the food department.
