Over 2,000 High-Tech CCTVs in Chandigarh, Yet Traffic Violations Persist: 7.12 Lakh Challans Issued in 10 Months

Chandigarh: Despite being equipped with over 2,000 high-tech CCTV cameras across traffic lights and key intersections, Chandigarh continues to witness significant traffic violations. From 1 January to 5 November 2025, the Chandigarh Traffic Police issued 7,12,000 challans, collecting nearly ₹17 crore in fines, according to official data.

While this figure is lower than last year’s 9,91,000 challans and ₹26.72 crore fines, it indicates that drivers remain careless despite technological monitoring.

Red Light Jumping Tops Violations

The majority of challans were issued for red light jumping, followed by overspeeding, riding without helmets, carrying three riders on motorcycles, and drunk driving. Social media also played a role in identifying violators, aiding police action.

The city’s 2,085 CCTV cameras are integrated with the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on 27 March 2022. A team of 28 police personnel monitors key locations 24/7.

Focus on Discipline and Responsibility

Traffic authorities said that while technology has strengthened monitoring and helped reduce violations, there remains a need to instill greater discipline and responsibility among road users. The use of CCTV footage and community reporting has made enforcement easier, but public cooperation remains crucial to improving road safety.
