Orphaned Camel Calf Wanders Desert in Search of Its Mother, Heart-Wrenching Scene Unfolds in Jaisalmer

A deeply moving incident from the desert region of Jaisalmer has left locals emotional, once again highlighting that animals, like humans, are capable of profound emotions and grief.

In the remote Lathi area of Jaisalmer district, a camel gave birth in a forested stretch near Sodhakor village, approximately three kilometres away. However, during labour, the camel’s condition deteriorated rapidly, and she died shortly after delivering the calf. With the mother gone within moments of its birth, the newborn was left helpless in the vast desert.

For nearly five days, the young camel calf remained close to its dead mother, wandering around her body as if searching for life. Witnesses said the calf repeatedly nudged the body with its head, attempting to wake her, and cried out loudly, refusing to leave the spot or move in search of food or water. The sight of the calf circling its mother, tears visible in its eyes, was enough to melt even the hardest hearts.

Tragedy struck again the very next day when stray dogs attacked the already vulnerable calf, leaving it seriously injured. Despite its wounds, the calf continued to stay near its mother’s remains, enduring pain and hunger, bound by an unbreakable emotional attachment.

The heartbreaking scene was first noticed by shepherds grazing their livestock in the oran (common grazing land) area. Shocked and moved by what they saw, they immediately informed villagers about the helpless animal.

Local residents Bhavani Singh Bhati, Hindu Singh Bhati, and Sang Singh Bhati of Sodhakor village alerted the Jagdamba Seva Samiti Trust. Acting swiftly, a rescue team from Bhaderiya Gaushala—led by animal protectors Gopal Singh Bhati, Dinesh Singh Devda, and Thanaram Bhil—reached the site and safely rescued the injured camel calf.

The calf was shifted to the gaushala, where it is currently undergoing treatment and receiving proper care. According to the rescue team, its condition is steadily improving.

This poignant incident from Rajasthan’s border region serves as a powerful reminder that the bond between a mother and her child transcends species—and that animals, too, experience love, loss, and grief with a depth that often goes unnoticed.
