Patna: The Opposition has prepared a strong strategy to corner the Bihar government during the ongoing Budget Session of the Assembly, raising serious questions over law and order and the credibility of investigations into major criminal and corruption cases.
Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav has indicated that the Opposition will not only raise the issue of the death of a NEET aspirant girl living in a Patna hostel, but will also aggressively bring up the long-pending matters of the Muzaffarpur Shelter Home case and the Srijan scam, alleging that justice has been delayed and accountability remains missing.
Tejashwi Questions Government’s Intentions
Speaking to the media on the day of the Budget presentation, Tejashwi Yadav referred to the alleged rape incident involving the NEET student and expressed strong distrust in the Nitish Kumar-led government.
When asked about the government handing over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Tejashwi questioned the effectiveness of such a move, citing previous cases where CBI probes failed to deliver timely justice.
He said, “What justice did people get in the Srijan scam or the Muzaffarpur Shelter Home case? Then how can anyone believe that the NEET student will get justice?”
The Opposition leader also criticized the government’s slogan of “development with justice”, claiming that reality on the ground reflects otherwise.
Opposition Alliance Ready to Launch Attack
The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), along with its alliance partners, has reportedly drawn up a clear plan to corner the government both inside and outside the Assembly.
Opposition parties are expected to challenge the government’s decision to transfer the NEET case to the CBI, alleging that such transfers often result in cases being pushed into cold storage.
The Mahagathbandhan believes the NEET case could meet the same fate as the Srijan scam and the Muzaffarpur Shelter Home incident, where final justice is still seen as delayed.
What is the Srijan Scam?
The Srijan scam involves the alleged misuse and illegal transfer of nearly ₹780 crore of government funds.
The scam is believed to have been masterminded by Manorama Devi, who was associated with the NGO “Srijan”. After her death, her son Amit Kumar and daughter-in-law Priya allegedly continued the fraudulent operations.
Reports suggest that the scam gained momentum after a government order in December 2003, allowing funds to be deposited into Srijan’s bank accounts. Between 2014 and 2015, around ₹285 crore was transferred into these accounts.
Investigations indicate that several government officials, employees, and officers from Bank of Baroda and Indian Bank were also involved. Fake entries were allegedly made in passbooks and official records to cover up illegal transactions.
The money deposited was reportedly used for high-interest lending, investment in land, business ventures, and other financial activities. Officials involved were allegedly rewarded with commissions and expensive gifts.
Political links have also been discussed in the case, with reports claiming that Manorama Devi had close ties with several leaders, including former MP Shahnawaz Hussain, Union Minister Giriraj Singh, and suspended BJP leader Vipin Sharma.
What is the Muzaffarpur Shelter Home Case?
The Muzaffarpur Shelter Home case is one of Bihar’s most shocking crimes involving the abuse of girls in a shelter run by an NGO named “Seva Sankalp Evam Vikas Samiti.”
The case came to light after allegations of sexual exploitation, rape, and torture. Medical examinations confirmed that 34 out of 42 girls living in the shelter were sexually abused.
An FIR was registered against 12 accused persons on May 31, 2018. It was also revealed that between 2013 and 2018, six girls went missing from the shelter, but no proper police record was maintained regarding their disappearance.
Experts Say Delay Raises Doubts
Political analyst Ram Bandhu Vats said that delays in the final outcome of both the Srijan scam and the Shelter Home case have raised serious doubts over the ruling NDA government’s intentions.
He stated that the prolonged delay fuels suspicion that attempts may be underway to dilute the cases or protect influential individuals. The Opposition believes that if investigations proceed fairly, several major political figures could come under scrutiny.
Vats termed the pending verdicts in these cases a “litmus test” for the government, saying it will decide whether the administration truly follows the principle of “neither saving anyone nor framing anyone.”
Opposition’s Focus During the Budget Session
With the NEET student death case now becoming a major political flashpoint, the Opposition is expected to launch a coordinated attack on the government, questioning its ability to ensure justice and demanding stronger monitoring of investigations, including possible Supreme Court supervision.
The coming days of the Bihar Assembly session are likely to witness intense confrontation, with the Opposition attempting to turn these cases into a major political challenge for the Nitish Kumar government.
