Opinion: Minister Drinking Filtered Water Finds Questions “Pointless,” BJP’s ‘Cultured Kailash’ Struggles to Keep His Tongue in Check

Bhopal/Indore: Senior BJP minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, often known for lecturing others on values and culture, once again sparked controversy with his unrestrained remarks. When questioned about preventable deaths in Indore, the minister dismissed the concerns as “pointless”, later issuing an apology.

The Controversial Statement
In Indore, a severe outbreak of diarrhea has affected residents of Bagirathpura for over 15 days, claiming 10 lives so far. Despite this, the government, including the Indore Municipal Corporation under Vijayvargiya’s Urban Development Department, appeared slow to act. When journalists raised questions about the handling of the crisis, the minister reportedly lost his temper, labeling the inquiry as a “useless question” and brushing aside the severity of the situation.

Senior BJP leaders and the public pointed out the irony: while locals suffered and drank contaminated water, Vijayvargiya and his family reportedly consume RO-filtered water. Critics argue that this makes it difficult for the minister to empathize with affected families, including parents who lost children due to tainted water.

Aftermath and Apology
Following the backlash, Vijayvargiya took to social media (X) to apologize, stating that he and his team had been working tirelessly for two days in the affected area. He explained that in the midst of grief caused by the water crisis, his words were poorly chosen. He added that he would continue working until all residents were safe and healthy.

Local Officials Under Scrutiny
The minister’s dismissive response was compounded by local BJP councillor Waghela, who was seen playing in a park while ten people had died in his constituency. Critics described both incidents as reflective of the government’s insensitivity and complacency.

A Pattern of Controversial Remarks
This is not the first time Vijayvargiya has made controversial statements. Known for preaching “values” to the public, he has previously drawn criticism for remarks on women’s clothing and the personal lives of political opponents like Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi. Despite repeated controversies, neither the party nor the government has restrained his outspoken behavior.

Public Anger and Accountability
Residents of Bagirathpura argue that the minister’s behavior exposes the gap between image and action. The BJP-led Indore Municipal Corporation is responsible for city sanitation and water supply, making Vijayvargiya directly accountable. Citizens stress that questions about life-threatening negligence cannot be dismissed casually, and leadership must be held responsible, not evaded.
