Open Drains Turn Deadly in Delhi: Youth Dies After Falling Into Sewer in Rohini

New Delhi: Open pits and uncovered manholes in Delhi continue to pose serious risks, claiming yet another life. A 32-year-old man died after falling into an open sewer near the Mahashakti Kali Mandir in Rohini Sector-32.

The deceased has been identified as Birju Kumar Rai, a migrant laborer from Samastipur, Bihar. According to reports, the incident occurred late Monday night when Birju lost his balance while returning home and fell into the uncovered drain. His friend, Budhan Das (alias Suraj), who was with him, reportedly did not inform anyone immediately due to both being under the influence of alcohol.

Police Response and Rescue Operation
The Delhi Police received information about the missing youth at around 2:36 PM on Tuesday, alerting them to a possible fall into a sewer. Upon arrival, authorities were informed by a caller, Amir Hussain, about the incident. A rescue operation involving police, Delhi Development Authority (DDA), and fire department personnel was launched to extricate Birju Kumar.

Despite their efforts, by the time he was rescued, Birju had already succumbed to his injuries. A large crowd had gathered near the scene during the rescue operation, highlighting public concern over the hazardous condition of open drains in the city.

This tragic incident comes shortly after a similar accident in Janakpuri, underscoring the urgent need for safety measures to prevent further loss of life due to unguarded manholes and open sewers in Delhi.
