Srinagar: Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has delivered a sharp critique of the India Alliance, drawing ire from Congress and RJD while giving the BJP an opportunity to capitalize. Speaking at a media event, Abdullah said the alliance is on “life support,” highlighting internal disagreements and setbacks that have hampered its effectiveness.
Alliance on “Life Support”
Abdullah noted that following Bihar’s assembly election defeat, the India Alliance is effectively struggling to regain stability. “Every time someone intervenes, we get a jolt. We rise again, but unfortunate results like in Bihar bring us down, and at times it feels like the alliance needs to be admitted to ICU,” he remarked.
Criticism Over Bihar Seat-Sharing
The J&K CM also expressed displeasure over the alliance’s handling of Bihar and Jharkhand politics. He pointed out that the alliance allowed Nitish Kumar to return to NDA’s fold and failed to include Hemant Soren’s Jharkhand Mukti Morcha in Bihar seat-sharing arrangements—an oversight he termed a major failure. RJD MPs responded by saying that while Abdullah’s comments may have been blunt, he remains an integral part of the alliance and accountability cannot be dismissed.
BJP Responds with Sarcasm
The BJP was quick to seize on Abdullah’s remarks. Party leader Shahnawaz Hussain dismissed the “life support” analogy, asserting that the India Alliance is not just struggling—it is dead. “The alliance has no leadership, no clear policy, and effectively ended after the last Lok Sabha elections. It deserves a eulogy, not life support,” he said.
Congress Defends Alliance
Congress MP Manoj Kumar countered the BJP’s jibe, affirming Abdullah’s loyalty to the alliance. “Omar is firmly with us. He is highlighting internal issues to strengthen the alliance, not to leave it. He is not going to the BJP; he remains with us. Jammu and Kashmir’s voters trust Rahul Gandhi, which reflects in Abdullah’s strong performance in the region,” Kumar stated.
Omar Abdullah’s candid statements have brought the India Alliance’s internal challenges into the public eye, sparking debate among allies and opponents alike.
