In a shocking revelation from Bhubaneswar, Odisha, the body of a ninth-grade student was found at the Kalinga Institute, initially reported by the administration as a result of cardiac arrest. However, police investigations have exposed a chilling truth: the student was murdered. Several staff members and students have been arrested in connection with the case.
Police Investigation Uncovers Murder
The Bhubaneswar police revealed that the deceased, a resident of Khurjar, was allegedly attacked by a group of fellow students on the night of 11 December following a fight in the hostel. The students reportedly strangled him in the washroom. Three underage students have been taken into custody and presented before the Juvenile Justice Board.
The police also arrested eight institute staff members for allegedly attempting to cover up the incident, intimidate witnesses, and destroy evidence.
Institute Background
Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), established in 1993 by Achyuta Samanta—also the founder of KIIT—provides free residential education to over 20,000 students from across Odisha.
Family Misled About Death
According to the victim’s father, on 12 December, KISS officials informed him that his son had been admitted to the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital for treatment. Upon arrival, doctors declared the student dead. KISS authorities claimed the cause of death was cardiac arrest and arranged for the body to be transported to Khurjar.
Postmortem Reveals Strangulation
Noticing injuries on the neck, the family grew suspicious and contacted police in Khurjar, demanding justice. A zero FIR was filed, and postmortem reports confirmed external injuries to the neck, indicating strangulation.
Following a police investigation in Bhubaneswar’s Infocity, three students admitted to assaulting and strangling the victim. The washroom where the murder took place has been sealed for further investigation.
