In a major breakthrough for law enforcement agencies, the Ghaziabad Police late Tuesday night arrested Deepak Gairathi, a notorious criminal from Gurugram who had spread fear across Haryana, Delhi and western Uttar Pradesh through a series of murders, extortion rackets and firing incidents. The arrest followed a brief but intense police encounter in the Tronica City area, during which the accused was injured.
According to police officials, Gairathi had been on the radar of multiple state police forces for a long time due to his extensive criminal history. He is known to be involved in serious offences including murder, attempt to murder and extortion, and had previously served jail terms in several cases.
Encounter During Late-Night Checking
ACP Loni Siddharth Gautam said that during routine late-night vehicle checking near Gate No. 3 in Tronica City, a suspicious motorcyclist was spotted approaching from the factory area. When police signalled him to stop, the accused allegedly opened fire at the police team and attempted to flee.
During the chase, the motorcycle skidded and fell. Despite this, Gairathi again fired at the police personnel. In retaliatory action, the police shot him in the leg, after which he was overpowered and taken into custody.
Weapons and Stolen Bike Recovered
Police recovered a country-made pistol, live cartridges, and a stolen Apache motorcycle from the spot. The injured accused was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for medical treatment and is currently under police guard.
Criminal Network Under Probe
Officials said that investigations are underway to uncover Gairathi’s wider criminal network and his involvement in other unsolved cases across the NCR and western UP. Police are also coordinating with Haryana and Delhi Police to verify pending warrants and cases registered against him.
The arrest is being seen as a significant success for the Ghaziabad Police and is expected to bring relief to residents and business owners who had long lived under the shadow of fear created by the criminal’s activities.
