**Noida The prime accused in the sensational Mohali double murder case—where senior journalist KJ Singh and his 90-year-old mother Gurucharan Kaur were brutally killed—has finally been arrested in Noida after evading police for nearly three years. Shockingly, during this long period, the accused, Gaurav Kumar, survived by constantly changing identities and working without verification as a cab driver, security guard and even security manager. The case has raised serious questions about police verification lapses in Noida.
Arrested from Noida’s Sector-36
Gaurav Kumar, a native of Bulandshahr, was arrested by Mohali Police from Sector-36, Noida, on 6 November. He had been declared an absconder in 2022 after jumping bail during the COVID-19 period.
Before his arrest, he had been working for almost one-and-a-half years with a private, unregistered security agency in Noida—first as a security guard and later as a manager. Despite being removed from the agency in March 2024, Gaurav approached the local RWA directly, offered to take charge of the residential security system, and slowly gained their trust. After his previous employer falsely confirmed his verification, the RWA handed over the responsibility to him. For more than a year, he functioned as the colony’s security manager—undetected.
After the arrest, the RWA has not issued any statement.
How the Crime Happened
Gaurav had earlier worked in Mohali. One day, he was spotted loitering suspiciously outside journalist KJ Singh’s residence in Phase 3B2. When Singh questioned him, an argument ensued. On the intervening night of 22–23 September 2017, Gaurav returned armed with a knife. He attacked Singh with multiple stab wounds, killing him on the spot.
Hearing the noise, Singh’s elderly mother came out of her room. Gaurav strangled her to death. To mislead investigators, he staged the crime scene to resemble a robbery—fleeing with the victim’s car, ATM card and valuables. Police later caught him driving the same car, now fitted with a fake number plate.
Declared Absconder After Jumping Bail
Gaurav was released on bail during the pandemic in 2020 but never returned to his home district or appeared before the court. After repeatedly skipping hearings, he was declared a fugitive in 2022. All this while, he lived freely in Noida, hiding behind fake identities and working in private jobs without any police verification.
Police Verification Under Scrutiny
Mohali DSP (Crime) Naveen Pal Singh Lahal stated that the case was extremely sensitive. Multiple police teams were working continuously, gathering information from different locations. He added that if verification protocols had been followed strictly, the accused could have been arrested much earlier.
