Commuters on Delhi’s Outer Ring Road can look forward to smoother travel as the Public Works Department (PWD) prepares a ₹325 crore project aimed at easing chronic traffic congestion near Modi Mill and Savitri Cinema. The comprehensive plan focuses on flyover expansion, road upgrades, and pedestrian safety, with completion expected within the next two years.
Busy Corridor Faces Chronic Congestion
The stretch from Modi Mill to IIT Gate in South Delhi is among the busiest in the city, with intersections at Maa Anandmayee Marg, Captain Gaur Marg, and Savitri Cinema frequently witnessing severe traffic jams. A PWD study concluded that increasing road capacity and improving traffic flow is essential for safer and faster travel.
Modi Mill Flyover Expansion
The Modi Mill Flyover will be extended up to Kalkaji Temple, spanning approximately 1.5 kilometers with six lanes, each nine meters wide. The upgraded flyover will include a central divider, crash barriers, and railings. Key intersections such as Captain Gaur Marg, Maa Anandmayee Marg, Lotus Temple Road, Masjid Moth Road, and Nehru Place Bus Depot will be better connected, reducing congestion and improving traffic efficiency.
Savitri Cinema Junction Revamp
The Savitri Cinema junction, a major bottleneck for residents of GK-I, CR Park, and GK-II, will see the construction of a 900-meter-long grade separator. This three-lane, one-way elevated road will feature a 435-meter elevated section connected via two ramps to the existing flyover, ensuring seamless traffic flow.
Project Details and Allocation
Of the total ₹325 crore budget, approximately ₹221 crore will be allocated to the Modi Mill Flyover, ₹26 crore to the Savitri Cinema Flyover, and the remaining funds will be used to upgrade existing roads, footpaths, and drainage systems. The project will also include dedicated bus bays, redesigned intersections for pedestrian safety, and improvements to street lighting, signage, and traffic management systems.
Commuters Can Expect Relief
The PWD plans to widen roads under the flyovers, create new U-turns, rebuild footpaths, and upgrade drainage to prevent waterlogging. Bicycle tracks, bus shelters, and retaining walls will be redesigned or relocated, ensuring smoother movement for vehicles and pedestrians alike. Modern flyover design combined with optimized traffic management aims to drastically improve travel efficiency across South Delhi’s heavily congested corridors.
With this ambitious project, Delhi’s Outer Ring Road could finally see a significant reduction in traffic jams, making daily commutes faster and safer for residents and travelers alike.
