New Delhi: Despite an early start to winter this year, Delhi has experienced neither fog nor significant cold. Residents have even felt warmth in the afternoon sun, raising questions about the city’s unusual weather patterns. Experts say that winter in Delhi is normally influenced by two factors: rainfall and fog. Both have been largely absent this November.
Weather Data
On Friday, the maximum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 25.9°C, slightly below the seasonal average by 0.1°C. The minimum temperature was 11.1°C, which is 2.2°C lower than normal. Humidity levels ranged between 46% and 100%.
Fog Missing This Season
Typically, Delhi experiences fog on 12 days in November, 19 days in December, and 21 days in January, along with about 6 mm of rainfall in November. However, this year, fog has not been observed even for a single day. Visibility has mostly remained above 1000 meters, with occasional drops at Palam Airport caused by smog rather than fog.
What Causes Fog?
Mahesh Palawat of Skymet Weather explains that three conditions are essential for fog formation in winter:
- Sufficient humidity
- Weak winds
- Minimum temperatures between 8°C and 10°C
These conditions are usually met during Western Disturbances, but so far in November, the city has seen only weak systems, and forecasts suggest no major disturbances in the next ten days.
Impact on Temperature and Rainfall
Due to the absence of fog, temperatures have remained relatively stable, and rainfall is unlikely over the next ten days. Meteorologists predict mostly clear skies, with occasional light fog in some areas. Maximum temperatures are expected around 26°C and minimum around 11°C. On 30 November, partly cloudy skies are expected.
