NIMHANS-2 to Be Set Up in Ranchi; CIP to Be Upgraded as Budget Highlights Mental Health

Ranchi: In a major push for mental health, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the establishment of NIMHANS-2 in Ranchi during the presentation of the Union Budget 2026-27. Ranchi, along with Tezpur, has been chosen as the site for this new facility, aimed at strengthening mental health care in northern India.

Upgrade for Central Institute of Psychiatry (CIP)
Ranchi is already home to the Central Institute of Psychiatry (CIP), one of Asia’s largest mental health hospitals, serving patients from across the country. The Budget announcement includes a plan to upgrade CIP, enhancing both treatment and research facilities. Established on May 17, 1918, originally known as the Ranchi European Lunatic Asylum, CIP spans nearly 200 acres and is recognized as a premier institution for mental health care.

Comprehensive Training and Research Programs
CIP offers undergraduate training and research in psychiatry, psychology, and social work. The hospital, with a capacity of over 600 beds, ensures that patients are not confined unnecessarily. It provides 24-hour emergency services, OPD care, and helpline facilities, making it one of the largest mental health centers serving economically disadvantaged patients.

Affordable Care for Patients Across the Region
The institute provides treatment, accommodation, meals, clothing, and medication at minimal cost. Its services attract patients not only from Jharkhand but also from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and the northeastern states. Alongside medical treatment, CIP offers psychotherapy, yoga, and indoor-outdoor recreational activities for patients, ensuring holistic care and recovery.

The establishment of NIMHANS-2 and the CIP upgrade are expected to give a new direction to mental health research and treatment in India, emphasizing accessibility, modern infrastructure, and quality care.
