NGT Issues Strict Warning on Narmada River’s Health; Seeks Compliance Report from Madhya Pradesh Environment Secretary

Bhopal: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has expressed serious concern over the deteriorating condition of the Narmada River, issuing strict directions to ensure its preservation. The tribunal has ordered the Principal Secretary (Environment), Madhya Pradesh, to submit a comprehensive compliance report on all previous instructions issued to maintain the river’s cleanliness and safety. NGT emphasized that there will be no compromise with the river’s natural flow.

Compliance Report to Include Multiple Agencies
The NGT Bhopal bench has directed the Environment Secretary to compile the report from various agencies, departments, district collectors, and municipal commissioners. The order came during the hearing of a petition filed by Kirti Kumar Sadashiv Bhatt. The report, based on NGT’s September 1, 2025, order, will be submitted to the tribunal registrar and presented before the bench, after which further action will be decided.

Key Directives for Preserving Narmada
The NGT has reiterated several critical measures to safeguard the river, including:

  • Demarcation of the river’s floodplain and removal of encroachments.
  • Prohibition of untreated sewage and solid waste discharge into the river.
  • Ban on illegal sand mining.
  • Ensuring the river’s flow remains stable throughout the year.

These measures aim to maintain the Narmada as the lifeline of Madhya Pradesh, supporting ecological balance, public health, and sustainable development.

Execution Petition Reviewed
The directives were reinforced during the hearing of an execution petition filed by social worker P.G. Najpan from Jabalpur. The NGT is closely monitoring compliance to ensure that previous instructions are implemented effectively, holding state authorities accountable for the river’s protection.
