Barwani (Madhya Pradesh): In a heartbreaking incident from Barwani district, a newborn girl—abandoned in freezing cold moments after birth—succumbed to severe hypothermia despite doctors’ efforts to save her. The infant was found dumped near bushes by a drain in Chiklia Malan village under Silawad police station late Wednesday night.
Found Abandoned in the Cold, Rushed to Hospital
Silawad Police Station in-charge Veer Singh Chauhan said villagers heard faint cries coming from bushes near a drain and immediately informed the police. The newborn girl was rescued and taken to the local government hospital. As her condition deteriorated, she was referred to the district hospital in Barwani, where she died during treatment on Thursday.
Police Searching for the Person Who Abandoned the Baby
A case has been registered against an unidentified person for abandoning the newborn. Following her death, additional charges are being added.
Barwani Police Station in-charge Dinesh Singh Kushwaha said the postmortem has been conducted and the case transferred to Silawad police for further investigation. Police are now trying to trace who gave birth to the baby and who left her to die.
Severe Hypothermia Proved Fatal
Dr. Roop Singh Bhadale, pediatric specialist at Barwani District Hospital, said the newborn weighed just 1.3 kg and was approximately 28 weeks premature. Her lungs were underdeveloped, and exposure to extreme cold caused severe hypothermia.
Doctors placed her on a ventilator and treated her as per protocol, but she could not survive. When brought to the district hospital, she was barely eight hours old.
A Disturbing Reminder of Social Neglect
The shocking incident has sparked anger and grief across the district, raising questions about social responsibility and the desperation that leads someone to abandon a newborn in extreme weather.
