New Twist in Nawada Lynching Case: Police to Probe Theft Angle After 11 Arrests

The lynching case from Bihar’s Nawada district has taken a significant new turn, with the police now expanding the scope of investigation after the emergence of another viral video on social media. The video allegedly indicates a possible theft angle linked to the brutal assault that led to the death of Atahar Hussain.

The incident pertains to Bhata village under the Roh block of Nawada district. A 20-second video that recently resurfaced online reportedly shows stolen household items scattered at the scene, with claims being made against Atahar Hussain himself. Following the circulation of this video, the police have decided to examine the matter from a fresh perspective, including allegations of theft that may have preceded the assault.

According to police records, Atahar Hussain was severely beaten on the night of December 5 on suspicion of theft and sustained critical injuries. He was initially treated at Nawada Sadar Hospital and later referred to a hospital in Bihar Sharif, where he succumbed to his injuries on December 12. Two separate FIRs were registered on December 6 in connection with the incident.

The victim’s wife, Shabnam Parveen, had named 10 individuals in her complaint and also mentioned the involvement of some unidentified persons. Acting on the complaint and subsequent investigation, the police have so far arrested 11 accused, including five named and six unidentified individuals.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Hulas Kumar confirmed that the assault was carried out on allegations of theft and stated that, under the new legal provisions, the process of registering a mob lynching case against the accused has been initiated. He also assured that the viral video is being thoroughly examined and verified, as it is believed to be from the same day the incident occurred.

The case had triggered tension in the area due to the involvement of two communities. However, the Nawada police administration has stated that the situation is now fully under control and that a comprehensive investigation is underway. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring strict legal action against all those found guilty, emphasizing that mob violence will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
