Neha Singh Rathore Backs UGC Law, Calls It a Product of “18-Hour Hard Work”

Lucknow: Popular folk singer Neha Singh Rathore has expressed her support for the newly introduced UGC law, emphasizing that caste-based discrimination and bias are longstanding social ailments that need urgent redress.

The new law, linked to the general category, has sparked widespread protests across Uttar Pradesh, including demonstrations by upper-caste groups in several districts and the resignation of PCS officer Alankar Agnihotri from the post of District Magistrate in Bareilly. Amidst this controversy, Rathore took to social media to appeal to the public to prioritize national interest over caste and community loyalties.

In a 2.5-minute video posted on her social media handle, Rathore said,
“Just as a thief would oppose laws against theft and an oppressor would oppose laws against oppression, those practicing discrimination naturally resist laws aimed at ending bias. If a law is created to protect any group, why should there be any objection? Caste-based discrimination and favoritism are deep-rooted illnesses in our society.”

“Bitter Medicine Cures Deep-Rooted Illness”
Rathore further elaborated,
“Old societal ailments can only be cured with bitter medicine. Laws like the SC/ST Act and reservation policies were also opposed initially. Bitter remedies are necessary to correct social injustices. Perhaps some are uncomfortable now because they can no longer humiliate others or because their unlawful privileges are being curtailed.”

A Question of National Interest
She added,
“The Constitution guarantees equal rights, but does every citizen truly receive equal respect? For years, meaningful action was delayed, and now some oppose even this step. Those opposing it are often the same people who, in the name of undivided India, compromise on essential services like health and education, and justify violence against their fellow citizens in the name of nationalism. Yesterday, they labeled questions to the government as sedition; today, they resist a law meant for fairness. Why is it so hard for them to accept it?”

“Don’t Sacrifice National Interest for Caste-Based Interests”
Rathore concluded,
“This law strengthens the nation. Those opposing it are, knowingly or unknowingly, speaking against national interest. Don’t compromise the country’s welfare for caste-based gains. National interest must come first, and caste and community come later. This is not an ordinary law—it has been the result of 18-hour long efforts. It deserves respect.”
