When the history of Bhojpuri cinema is written, ‘Nadiya Ke Paar’ will always hold a special place. Released on October 10, 1982, this film was more than just a blockbuster—it became a cultural phenomenon. Every song from the movie became iconic, and its depiction of rural Bihar resonated deeply with audiences. Now, 43 years later, Patna will witness a special screening of this classic film.
A Timeless Musical Charm
The film’s title song, “Kaun disha mein leke chala re batohiya”, sung melodiously by Hemlata and Jaspal Singh, continues to captivate listeners even today. Lyrics such as “Tang karne ka tose naata hai gujriya” are remembered for their simplicity and charm. The movie’s portrayal of village life, social dynamics, playful mischief, and commentary on dowry practices made it an unforgettable cinematic experience. Actors Sachin Pilgaonkar and Sadhana Singh became overnight stars thanks to the film’s massive popularity.
Special Screening in Patna
The Bihar State Film Development and Finance Corporation Ltd., under the guidance of the Department of Art, Culture and Youth, is organizing the special screening at Regent Cinema Hall, Gandhi Maidan, Patna. The initiative aims to reconnect today’s youth with their cultural roots, showcasing Bhojpuri traditions and societal values. Arvind Ranjan Das, an official of the Film Development Corporation, stated that the film is part of the weekly “Coffee with Film” program, which features films highlighting Bihar’s culture and heritage.
Panel Discussion Alongside Screening
A discussion will accompany the screening, exploring how director Govind Moonis and producer Tarachand Barjatya brought Keshav Prasad Mishra’s novel ‘Kohbar Ki Shart’ to life. The film’s narrative on love, social harmony, and critique of dowry customs remains relevant today. Many credit this classic as a precursor to Rajshri Productions’ later blockbuster, ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’, which also celebrated rural culture and familial bonds. Iconic characters like Chandan and Goonja continue to be cherished by audiences who grew up in the 1980s.
Event Highlights
The program will feature Pranav Kumar, Secretary of the Department of Art, Culture and Youth, as the chief guest, with the managing director of the Bihar State Film Development Corporation serving as the host. A dialogue on “Regional Films of Bihar: Connecting with Our Roots” will also take place, engaging local dignitaries and film enthusiasts. The event has generated excitement among Patna residents, especially those with a love for Bhojpuri cinema, eager to relive a classic that defined an era.
