Muzaffarpur in the Shadow of Crime and Killings: Incidents That Shook the District in 2025

The year 2025 has come to an end, leaving behind deep scars on Muzaffarpur district, which remained in the spotlight throughout the year due to a series of tragic accidents, gruesome crimes, and heartbreaking incidents. From fatal road crashes and devastating fires to mass suicide and brutal crimes against children, these events not only rattled the district but also drew statewide and national attention.

Madhubani New Bypass Accident Claims Five Lives

One of the most tragic incidents of the year occurred on February 1, when a severe road accident on the Madhubani New Bypass four-lane road claimed the lives of five people. The victims were returning to Nepal after taking a holy dip at the Prayagraj Mahakumbh. Four members of the same family, along with the Scorpio driver, lost their lives. Several others sustained critical injuries and were admitted to Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) before being shifted to Nepal for further treatment.

Motipur Fire Tragedy Wipes Out a Family

On the night of November 15, a horrifying fire broke out due to a short circuit in a three-storey house belonging to a PDS dealer at Ward No. 13, Neta Road, Motipur Nagar Parishad. The blaze claimed the lives of seven members of a single family, including two young children, who were burnt alive. Five others suffered severe burn injuries, two of whom later succumbed during treatment.
In another tragic fire incident, a Diwali-night blaze caused by an oil lamp in Maripur left four members of a bank manager’s family dead.

Mass Suicide in Sakra Stuns the State

In December, the district witnessed one of its most disturbing incidents when a labourer ended his life along with his three daughters in Navalpur Mishrauliya village under Sakra police station. Poverty, mounting debt, and mental stress are believed to be the primary reasons behind the incident. The tragedy shook the entire state, prompting a joint investigation by district police and the CID. The final findings are awaited.

Kurhani Rape and Murder Case Sparks Nationwide Outrage

The most horrifying crime of 2025 occurred in July, when a six-year-old girl was brutally raped and murdered in Kurhani. The child fought for her life for three days while undergoing treatment at SKMCH and later PMCH, before succumbing to her injuries. The incident triggered massive public outrage across the country. Police acted swiftly, arrested the accused, filed a chargesheet based on scientific evidence, and ensured conviction through a speedy trial. Leaders from both the ruling party and the opposition visited Muzaffarpur to demand justice for the victim.

A Year That Left Muzaffarpur Traumatised

From deadly accidents and infernos to suicides and heinous crimes, 2025 exposed the grim reality of law-and-order challenges and social distress in Muzaffarpur. While police and administrative responses were prompt in many cases, the repeated tragedies raised serious concerns about road safety, fire preparedness, mental health support, and protection of vulnerable sections of society.

As Muzaffarpur steps into 2026, the district carries the hope that lessons learned from this painful year will lead to stronger governance, better safety mechanisms, and a more secure future for its people.
