Muzaffarpur, Bihar: A chilling murder that shocked Bihar four years ago has reached a judicial milestone. The Muzaffarpur ‘Blue Drum’ case, in which Rakesh Sahni was brutally murdered by his wife’s lover, Subhash Sharma, has resulted in a guilty verdict. The gruesome murder, which took place in September 2021, involved dismembering the body and placing it in a blue plastic drum in an attempt to destroy evidence. The District and Additional Sessions Judge declared Subhash Sharma guilty, with sentencing scheduled for February 13, 2026.
The Blue Drum Murder
The incident occurred in Balu Ghat locality of Muzaffarpur in September 2021. Rakesh Sahni, who worked in Delhi, was living away from home while his wife Radha stayed in a rented house in Muzaffarpur with their three children, her sister, and her brother-in-law. During this period, Radha allegedly began an extramarital affair with Subhash Sharma of Akharaghat Bandh Road.
Radha reportedly wished to continue life with Subhash Sharma, and her husband became an obstacle. When Rakesh returned home, a premeditated plan was executed, resulting in his murder. To conceal the crime, the perpetrators dismembered Rakesh’s body and placed the parts in a blue drum with chemicals intended to dissolve the remains.
Crime Discovery
The murder came to light in a dramatic sequence. The drum, containing salt, bleaching powder, and phenyl, reacted chemically, causing a violent explosion and a fire in the room on the night of September 18, 2021. Firefighters responding to the blaze discovered the dismembered body in the drum.
Following the incident, Rakesh Sahni’s brother, Dinesh Sahni of Kapuri Nagar Akharaghat, filed an FIR on September 19, 2021, naming Radha Devi, her sister Krishna Devi, brother-in-law Vikas Kumar, and Subhash Sharma as accused in the case.
The trial concluded four years later with Subhash Sharma being held accountable for the gruesome crime, sending a stern message on justice in cases of premeditated murder.
