The weather in Mussoorie, popularly known as the “Queen of the Hills,” witnessed a sudden change on Friday as light rain and snow flurries were reported across the town and its surrounding areas. The shift in weather has led to a noticeable drop in temperature, bringing much-needed relief to residents, tourists, and farmers who had been grappling with prolonged dry conditions.
From early morning, dark clouds enveloped the sky, accompanied by intermittent light rainfall. In higher-altitude areas, mild snow flurries further enhanced the wintry charm of the hill station. As temperatures dipped, people were seen bundling up in warm clothes and lighting bonfires to cope with the increased chill.
For nearly three months, Mussoorie and nearby regions had not experienced any significant rainfall or snowfall, resulting in dry conditions that adversely affected crops and local livelihoods. Prolonged dry cold had also led to a rise in cases of seasonal ailments such as colds, skin problems, and respiratory issues. The latest spell of rain has therefore been welcomed as a major relief.
Farmers and orchard owners are hopeful that the change in weather will restore soil moisture and benefit standing crops. Meanwhile, those associated with the tourism sector believe that if snowfall continues in the coming days, Mussoorie could witness a surge in tourist arrivals, providing a boost to the local economy.
The Meteorological Department had earlier forecast rainfall and snowfall in the higher reaches of Uttarakhand, a prediction that now appears to be coming true. According to weather experts, rain and snowfall activity in and around Mussoorie may intensify over the next 24 to 48 hours.
At present, the changed weather has brought both relief and renewed hope to the hill town, with residents and visitors alike eagerly watching the skies in anticipation of heavier snowfall.
