Munawwar Rana’s Daughter Files Dowry Harassment Case, Alleges Triple Talaq and Assault in Lucknow

Lucknow: Shiba Rana, daughter of noted Urdu poet Munawwar Rana, has filed a police complaint alleging dowry harassment, physical assault, mental cruelty, and instant triple talaq by her husband and in-laws. A case has been registered at Saadatganj police station, and an investigation is underway.

According to the complaint, Shiba Rana, a mother of two, alleged that she was subjected to repeated violence and harassment soon after her marriage over additional dowry demands. She claimed she was assaulted several times and was even threatened with death. The accused family members allegedly continued to pressure her for more money despite earlier payments made at the time of marriage.

April 9 incident

Rana stated that an incident on April 9, 2025, drastically changed her life. On that day, her husband allegedly abused and brutally assaulted her. When her sister, Arshiya Rana alias Tina, arrived at the house to check on her, the situation escalated further. Rana alleged that her husband pronounced “talaq” three times during the altercation, forced her out of the house, and locked their two minor children inside a room.

Marriage and dowry claims

In her written complaint, Rana said she married Syed Mohammad Saqib, a resident of Kareemganj, on December 19, 2013. She alleged that her family provided dowry beyond their financial capacity at the time of the wedding, including gold and diamond jewellery and approximately ₹10 lakh in cash.

She further claimed that after some time, her husband and in-laws began demanding an additional ₹20 lakh and a flat. According to Rana, her parental family attempted multiple reconciliations to protect her marriage and children, but the harassment did not stop.

Police investigation

After the alleged incident, Rana said she managed to escape and return to her parental home before approaching the police. Saadatganj station in-charge Santosh Kumar Arya confirmed that a case has been registered against the husband and in-laws based on the complaint. He said the matter is being investigated seriously and further legal action will follow after the inquiry is completed.

The case has drawn public attention due to the family’s prominence and has once again highlighted concerns around dowry harassment and domestic violence.
