Mumbai, January 30, 2026: Sahar police have arrested a taxi driver for allegedly defrauding an American tourist by charging an exorbitant fare for a short ride in Mumbai. The accused has been identified as 50-year-old Deshraj Yadav.
According to police reports, Yadav allegedly charged the woman ₹18,000 (approximately USD 200) for a ride of just 400 meters from Mumbai International Airport to a nearby five-star hotel. The incident occurred on January 12, 2026, when the tourist had just arrived from the United States. Instead of taking her directly to the hotel, Yadav reportedly drove her through a dark area for about 20 minutes before finally dropping her off at the hotel entrance and demanding the inflated fare.
How the Case Came to Light:
The victim, Argentina Arriano, shared her experience on social media platform X on January 26, 2026. Her video quickly went viral, garnering over 100,000 views, and included the taxi registration number. Using this information, Sahar police launched an investigation. Unable to contact the victim directly, authorities filed an FIR on January 27, 2026, and arrested Yadav within three hours. The operation was overseen by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone-8, Manish Kalwania, with Senior Inspector Manoj Chalke and his team conducting the investigation.
Investigation Details:
Police gathered information from the hotel where the victim stayed. She had checked in on January 12, checked out the following day, and proceeded to Pune before leaving India. She had not reported the incident to hotel staff. Authorities are now attempting to record her formal statement. Police also indicated that an accomplice of the driver may have been involved, and efforts to trace them are ongoing.
Current Status:
Deshraj Yadav is currently in police custody, and his taxi has been seized. Authorities have informed the Transport Department to cancel his driving license, and Yadav faces charges of fraud and cheating under the Indian Penal Code.
