Mumbai Metro: Another Metro Line for Navi Mumbai to Connect City Interiors and Airports

Navi Mumbai: For the first time, Navi Mumbai will have an internal metro line, with Metro Line 8 connecting the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). The line will feature 11 proposed stations across the city and has now been integrated into the 337 km metro network of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

Metro Line 8 Project Details
The Maharashtra government, in collaboration with the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Ltd. (CIDCO), has approved Metro Line 8 to provide direct connectivity to Navi Mumbai’s suburbs. This will be the city’s first “internal metro” line, aimed at easing intra-city travel while linking key residential and commercial hubs.

A detailed report on the line has been prepared after government approval, outlining the proposed route and stations. The metro will start from Mankhurd, cross the Vashi Creek Bridge, and connect to the Sion-Panvel Highway. The route will pass through Nerul, Seawoods, Ulwe, and directly reach the Navi Mumbai International Airport.

Implementation and Operational Responsibility
Earlier, the project was planned to be jointly executed by CIDCO and MMRDA. However, the full responsibility of implementation now lies with CIDCO. The project will be executed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. With the anticipated opening of Navi Mumbai Airport on 25 December, Metro Line 8 is expected to play a critical role in managing growing traffic, providing faster travel between the two airports and improving connectivity for the rapidly developing city.
