Mumbai BMC Elections: MNS-Shiv Sena UBT Alliance Sealed, Thackeray Brothers to Announce Tomorrow

Mumbai, Maharashtra: In a major political development in Maharashtra, the Shiv Sena (UBT) led by Uddhav Thackeray has formally entered into an alliance with Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) ahead of the municipal elections. The formal announcement will be made tomorrow, December 24, in Mumbai by the Thackeray brothers. This update was shared by Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Rajya Sabha MP, Sanjay Raut, who confirmed that the announcement will take place at 12 PM.

The alliance comes as Mumbai, along with 29 other municipal corporations in the state, prepares for elections. Voting for these elections is scheduled for January 15, with results to be declared on January 16. This marks the first political collaboration between Raj and Uddhav Thackeray in 20 years, creating significant buzz in Maharashtra’s political circles. The move is being closely watched by the BJP and the faction of Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde, as it could potentially alter political equations across the state.

The backdrop to this alliance stems from recent municipal council elections where the Mahavikas Aghadi alliance, including Shiv Sena UBT and Sharad Pawar’s party, suffered setbacks, while the BJP emerged as the top-performing party. The reconciliation between the Thackeray brothers reportedly began after they joined forces on the issue of making Hindi compulsory in Maharashtra. Since then, talks of an MNS–Shiv Sena (UBT) alliance had been underway.

A Political Turning Point in Maharashtra

Political analysts view this alliance as a turning point. The upcoming BMC elections are crucial for Uddhav Thackeray’s political stature; a defeat in Mumbai could weaken his influence in state politics. According to Raut, the Thackeray brothers will also announce seat-sharing arrangements during tomorrow’s announcement. Raj Thackeray, known for his eloquence, is expected to play a key role in campaigning. Analysts suggest that the entry of both brothers into the electoral fray could pose a significant challenge to the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance.

Nominations for the Mumbai BMC and other municipal corporations have already begun, setting the stage for what promises to be a fiercely contested election.
