Mumbai | February 3: The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project achieved a significant milestone on Tuesday with the completion of the second tunnel’s excavation in Palghar district, Maharashtra. This marks the second tunnel breakthrough within a month, following the first tunnel breakthrough on January 2.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw joined the celebration online, applauding the achievement as the tunnel boring machine (TBM) completed the final section of the tunnel. Engineers and staff on-site waved the national flag and echoed patriotic slogans of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”, marking the momentous occasion.
The 508-kilometre Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor is slated to become India’s first high-speed rail line, with operations expected to commence on August 15, 2027. Once completed, the train will reduce travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad to just two hours.
The initial trial runs of the bullet train will be conducted in Gujarat, covering the stretch from Surat to Bilimora, according to Minister Vaishnaw. The train is expected to play a key role during the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad.
Project Highlights:
- Total corridor length: 508 km (348 km in Gujarat, 156 km in Maharashtra, 4 km in Dadra & Nagar Haveli)
- Number of stations: 12
- Maximum speed: 320 km/h
- Tunnel length: 21 km (7 km underwater, 8 mountain tunnels)
- Bridges: 28 major bridges and 25 river bridges
The milestone underscores rapid progress in the country’s flagship high-speed rail project, bringing India closer to joining the elite group of nations with operational bullet trains.
