Muzaffarnagar (Uttar Pradesh): A major controversy has erupted in Muzaffarnagar after a muazzin of Medina Mosque allegedly threatened to behead a police sub-inspector, triggering widespread concern within the police department and among religious organisations. The accused, identified as Mohammad Irfan, was arrested under preventive sections related to breach of peace and later released on bail.
The incident pertains to the Civil Lines police station area, specifically Medina Chowk, where the Medina Mosque is located. The matter has remained at the centre of public discourse for the past two days after multiple videos related to the episode went viral on social media.
Allegations of Assault During Azaan
According to Mohammad Irfan, the muazzin of Medina Mosque, the dispute began when Kachchi Sadak outpost in-charge Vinod Chaudhary allegedly objected to the volume of the loudspeaker during azaan. Irfan accused the officer of pushing and physically assaulting him. A video purportedly showing the confrontation surfaced online, prompting members of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind to submit a memorandum to the Senior Superintendent of Police, demanding action against the officer.
While police authorities were examining these allegations, a second viral video emerged, dramatically altering the course of the case.
Threat Video Sparks Police Action
In the newly surfaced video, Mohammad Irfan is seen speaking to Jamiat workers, during which he allegedly lost his temper and issued a threat to slit the throat of the police sub-inspector. The video quickly gained traction online, causing alarm within law enforcement circles.
Taking serious note of the threat, police registered an FIR under relevant sections and arrested the muazzin on Saturday, sending him to jail before granting bail under preventive provisions.
Police Statement
City Circle Officer Siddharth Mishra stated that on December 11, a video surfaced on social media showing an individual expressing anger over the removal of a loudspeaker and issuing a life threat to a police personnel.
“Based on the viral content, a case was registered at Civil Lines police station, the accused was arrested, and further legal proceedings have been initiated,” the officer said.
Demand for Action Against the Officer
Despite the arrest, tensions remain high, with sections of the local community questioning why no immediate action has been taken against the police sub-inspector accused of assault. Authorities have assured that both aspects of the incident are under investigation and appropriate action will be taken based on findings.
The incident has once again highlighted the sensitivity surrounding loudspeaker use at religious places and the need for restraint and dialogue to prevent escalation.
