MP Groom Returns ₹7 Lakh Dowry, Accepts Only One Rupee and Coconut in Inspirational Move

Chhoti Harda, MP – 18 November 2025: In a remarkable gesture against the age-old practice of dowry, groom Amit (Sidhu) and his father returned ₹7 lakh that was sent as dowry, accepting only one rupee and a coconut in its place. Their decision has earned widespread praise across the district and within the Jat community, setting an inspiring example against dowry culture.

Refusing Dowry, Upholding Social Values
The incident occurred ahead of Amit’s wedding with Jayshree from Bhuvan Khedi, scheduled for 22 November. The bride’s family had sent ₹7 lakh as dowry during the pre-wedding rituals. Amit, who holds a postgraduate degree, consulted his father and together they refused the dowry entirely, emphasizing that their priority was the bride herself, not material gifts.

In a symbolic gesture of respect toward the bride’s father, Ramshankar Bhari, Amit and his father accepted only a nominal token of one rupee and a coconut during the ceremony.

Praise for the Couple’s Stand
The couple’s family has been widely appreciated by the local community for taking a firm stand against a practice that has caused countless social issues across the country, including harassment and violence against brides. Amit emphasized that “there is no greater gift than the gift of a daughter” and called dowry a social evil that must be eradicated.

Steadfast in Decision Despite Pressure
During the pre-wedding rituals, the bride’s family repeatedly requested that the dowry be accepted, but Amit and his father remained firm. They completed the religious ceremonies with only the symbolic offerings, underscoring their commitment to social reform. Amit’s father remarked, “When you give your daughter in marriage, it means you have given your everything. There is no need for additional gifts.”

This bold and socially responsible act is being celebrated as a powerful example for others to follow, sending a strong message that dowry has no place in modern society.
