Bhopal: Drinking habits in Madhya Pradesh are witnessing a significant shift, with chilled beer now emerging as the most preferred alcoholic beverage among consumers. Beer sales have surged past both local spirits and IMFL (Indian-Made Foreign Liquor), marking a notable change over the past five years.
According to official statistics, beer sales are now three times higher than IMFL, while local liquor remains second, with sales twice that of IMFL but still lower than beer.
Beer Becomes the Top Choice
Over the last five years, preferences in MP have shifted dramatically. Until 2021–22, local liquor dominated sales in the state. However, beer consumption has consistently increased each year, claiming the top spot for the last three years. Local liquor continues to rank second.
In 2020–21, local liquor sales stood at 899.16 lakh proof liters, rising to 1,522.76 lakh proof liters in 2024–25. By November 2025–26, consumption had already reached 921.79 lakh proof liters.
IMFL Consumption Doubles but Lags Behind
IMFL sales have also doubled over the past five years, though they still trail both beer and local liquor. Sales of IMFL increased from 420.65 lakh proof liters in 2020–21 to 720.75 lakh proof liters in 2024–25, with 555.90 lakh proof liters consumed by November 2025–26. During the same period, beer sales rose from 840.77 lakh bulk liters in 2020–21 to 962.42 lakh bulk liters in 2021–22.
Government Revenue Sees Significant Growth
Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Jagdish Devda shared this data on 18 December while marking the state government’s two-year milestone. The rising liquor sales have also contributed to a substantial increase in government revenue. Excise department revenue grew from ₹9,520.96 crore in 2020–21 to ₹15,254 crore in 2024–25.
