Bhopal, December 17, 2025: The Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly marked its 69th anniversary today with a special session focused on the theme “Developed, Self-Reliant, and Prosperous Madhya Pradesh.” Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav outlined the state’s future roadmap during a lively discussion on development and governance.
Governor Mangu Bhai Patel inaugurated a photo exhibition tracing the Assembly’s seven-decade journey, highlighting key milestones and achievements from the first Assembly to the current 16th Assembly.
However, the session was overshadowed by protests from Congress MLAs who opposed the central government’s decision to rename the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) as the “Developed India Guarantee for Employment and Livelihood Mission (Rural).”
Led by Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar, Congress legislators staged a strong demonstration inside the Assembly premises, criticizing the move as an insult to Mahatma Gandhi. Singhar said, “While Prime Minister Modi talks about Gandhi’s ideals, they are removing his name from MGNREGA. Is the BJP afraid of Bapu?”
In addition, Congress hailed the government’s decision to withdraw the Land Pooling Act proposed for the Ujjain Simhastha Mela area as a victory for the people, attributing it to farmer protests and public pressure.
The photo exhibition inaugurated by the Governor presented a visual history of the Assembly, its landmark decisions, and important legislative moments over the decades, celebrating the institution’s enduring legacy in shaping Madhya Pradesh’s governance.
