Mother and Daughter Found Hanging in Giridih, Debt Pressure Suspected Behind Tragic Deaths

Giridih: In a heart-rending incident, the bodies of a 35-year-old woman and her teenage daughter were found hanging inside their home in Jharkhand’s Giridih district on Monday, triggering shock and grief across the village. The family has alleged that mounting pressure over a loan taken from a women’s self-help group may have driven the duo to suicide.

The deceased have been identified as Putul Devi (35) and her 15-year-old daughter Sneha Kumari, residents of Gadi Srirampur village under the Mufassil police station area. Both bodies were discovered suspended from a noose in a single room of their house under suspicious circumstances.

Door Did Not Open, Raised Suspicion

According to family members, Putul Devi and Sneha had gone to sleep together in the same room on Sunday night. When the door failed to open for an unusually long time on Monday morning, relatives grew suspicious. After forcing the door open, they were left stunned by the sight of the mother and daughter hanging from the ceiling.

Villagers and family members immediately brought both of them down and rushed to help, but they had already died by then.

Loan Pressure from Self-Help Group Alleged

The tragic news spread quickly, drawing a large crowd and plunging the village into mourning. The woman’s husband, Sonu Ram, an auto-rickshaw driver, said his wife had been under severe mental stress for some time.

Family members claimed that Putul Devi had taken a loan from a women’s self-help group without informing anyone at home. Continuous phone calls and alleged pressure over repayment of instalments reportedly pushed her into deep distress.

She often broke down in tears due to stress, but never openly shared what was troubling her,” Sonu Ram told police.

Sneha was a Class 10 student and was said to be academically bright. Her sudden death has left the local community shaken.

Police Launch Probe, All Angles Being Examined

On receiving information, SDPO Jeetwahan Uraon and Mufassil police station in-charge Sub-Inspector Shyam Kishore Mahto reached the spot along with a police team. The police inspected the scene and sent both bodies to Sadar Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Officials said they are questioning family members and nearby residents to reconstruct the sequence of events.

Confirming the case, SDPO Jeetwahan Uraon stated,
Two people have died by suicide in Gadi Srirampur village. The police are investigating the matter from all angles to ascertain the real cause behind the incident. We are also examining the nature of the alleged pressure related to loan recovery and whether any form of harassment was involved.

The incident has once again raised serious concerns about financial stress, informal lending pressures, and the mental health impact of debt on vulnerable families in rural areas.
