Moradabad, UP: A unique interfaith marriage in Moradabad has captured widespread attention. Muntareen, a Muslim woman, observed her fast during Ramadan and married her long-time Hindu boyfriend, Ajay, following Hindu wedding rituals. She broke her fast by drinking Ganga water immediately after the wedding.
Marriage and Police Involvement
The couple, hailing from Sunai village under Billari Police Station, had been in a relationship for several years. Muntareen’s family opposed the union because Ajay is Hindu. On Friday, she left home during the fast and performed seven pheras with Ajay at a temple. After the wedding, Muntareen, now going by the name Muskan, appeared before SSP Satpal Antil, requesting protection, citing threats from her family. The SSP instructed the local police to investigate and take necessary action.
Couple’s Statement
Muskan stated that she and Ajay have been in a relationship for four to five years and wished to live together. She confirmed that her family posed a threat, prompting her to approach the police for safety.
Ajay added that the couple has known each other for five to six years. Muskan is 23 and he is 25. Their families had previously filed a case against them after seeing them together, which led to Ajay serving seven months in jail. Despite legal challenges and opposition, the couple did not abandon their relationship and ultimately married.
SSP’s Directive
Following Muskan and Ajay’s plea, the SSP assured them of protection and instructed the relevant local police station to ensure their safety. The case regarding the earlier family opposition is still ongoing.
Significance
This case highlights challenges faced by couples in interfaith relationships, particularly when familial opposition threatens personal safety. The proactive steps by law enforcement in Moradabad aim to ensure the couple’s protection while respecting their right to marry.
